Romanian treasure recovered after dramatic heist
A priceless golden helmet, the Helmet of Coțofenești, has been recovered after being stolen from the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, where it was on loan as part of a six-month exhibition. The 2,500-year-old artifact, crafted during the Dacia civilization around 450 BCE, was stolen along with three golden bracelets in January 2025.
The theft sparked a diplomatic incident, with Romanian officials urging Dutch police to recover the treasure. Three suspects were arrested shortly after the break-in, and a plea deal led to the recovery of the helmet and two bracelets. The artifacts were unveiled at the Drents Museum on April 3, with minor damage to the helmet.
“We are incredibly pleased,” said Corien Fahner, chief prosecutor for the North Netherlands Public Prosecution Service. The recovery is a relief for Romania and the Drents Museum staff.
The Helmet of Coțofenești is a significant cultural icon, showcasing the Dacia civilization’s craftsmanship. Its recovery is a testament to international cooperation in combating art theft.
