Empowering women: Moogambigai’s journey brings classical dance to rural Tamil Nadu
K. Velur, a small village in Tamil Nadu, witnessed a historic moment as a group of enthusiastic little girls performed Bharatanatyam on stage, dressed in vibrant costumes and adorned with delicate creepers in their hair. The performance, led by their teacher Moogambigai Murugesan, marked a milestone – it was the first classical dance presentation in the village.
Moogambigai’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of dance. Raised in a family where boys were valued more, she had resigned herself to a conventional life. However, meeting Sangeeta Isvaran, who recognized the empowering potential of dance, changed her trajectory. Now, Moogambigai is inspiring young girls in rural Tamil Nadu, teaching them Bharatanatyam and instilling confidence and vigour.
The performance, set to the song ‘Eriyae daivam enru…’, highlighted the importance of preserving traditional water bodies like ponds, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The girls danced with joy, showcasing their training and talent.Moogambigai’s story is a beacon of hope for women in rural areas, demonstrating that dance can be a powerful tool for empowerment and social change.
