NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a ₹14,500 crore Viability Gap Funding scheme to develop 92 GWh of grid-scale energy storage from 2026-27 to 2030-31.
The capacity includes 60 GWh of hydro pumped storage, 30 GWh of battery storage, and 2 GWh from alternative technologies. The projects are expected to attract ₹97,600 crore investment.
The new capacity equals 170% of India’s present storage capacity and will help meet the 411 GWh requirement by 2031-32.
The scheme aims to store surplus solar and wind power and ensure reliable, round-the-clock supply.
