India-EU FTA to be signed on December 16

New Delhi: The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union will be signed on December 16, 2026, two diplomatic sources have separately confirmed.

The signing is expected to be part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s back-to-back diplomatic visits in December to Canada, the U.S., and Belgium, where three separate FTAs are currently either being negotiated or in the process of approval.

The India-EU deal has been under negotiation for several years. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic have held multiple rounds of talks, including a meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on January 27, 2026, in the presence of Prime Minister Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

If signed, the agreement would mark one of India’s largest trade pacts and is expected to boost market access, investment flows and supply chain integration between India and the 27-member bloc.
